Every design tells a story

Where it all begins with Corey Buss, Senior Project Designer | Architecture

Great design starts with a compelling story that’s unique to each project. Where does the story start? Before concept development, every design team first explores the project’s existing environment.

  • We visit local restaurants, parks, entertainment venues, historic buildings, and new developments.

  • We observe how people are interacting with these spaces and define the elements that excite them.

  • Together we crystallize what’s working, what’s drawing the people in and keeping them engaged.

  • We then ground the story at the intersection of the tangible and intangible.

    • An exploration of an NJ site led to the discovery of a nearby nature preserve that featured an overlook and impressive view of New York’s skyline. The natural rocky outcroppings juxtaposed against the soaring skyline inspired a design strategy that simultaneously fostered grounding and aspirational elevation.

    • Research of another NJ site uncovered soil rich in clay deposits that were used for brickmaking in the area. Argile, the French word for clay, inspired the project’s design aesthetic which was “sculpted” to incorporate elements of traditional French architecture with contemporary forms and details.

    • A property in Winnetka, Il, a northern suburb of Chicago, was in its early days a destination that offered visitors serenity in a calm, countryside environment. An artwork installation inspired by heirloom timepieces harken back to this slower time of reflection and creativity.

In each case, the story we chose and developed aligned with the project’s position and inspired stand-out designs.
